The Economics of a Woodburning Stove

If you are looking to keep your home warm, you need to consider purchasing a stove. A stove will provide heat for the room you’re in, and you might also be able to add pipes for it to bring hot air through different rooms on its way out of your house. You need to make sure that you have a lined chimney that will usher the smoke out of your house quickly. However, your stove needs to be made of a reliable insulating material such as heavy iron. Then, you need to choose which kind of fuel you need.

Hardwood

Hardwood is the most common type of fuel for Hampshire woodburning stoves. Hardwood is about twice as dense as softwood, which means that it burns about twice as long. However, that also means it has about half the amount of oxygen trapped in its fibres. Softwood lights much easier and burns much hotter and faster. However, it will burn up faster than hardwood, and it also tends to produce more smoke than hardwood does.

Most people choose hardwood for their stove fuel, but you have to also make sure you are buying enough kindling to light the hardwood. The large logs do not light easily.

Fuel Prices

Fuel prices tend to fluctuate. Hardwood is slightly more expensive than softwood, but is generally the best financial option. There are also options for compressed wood pellets. They are processed, so they are slightly more expensive, but they burn much longer and hotter than unprocessed wood does. This is a great option if you have a good source for pellets.
