How Is Your Garden Progressing This Year

Compost that is made from 100% garden waste can serve as a friendly substitute to compost that is made of peat. This type of compost is suitable for a number of uses including nurturing the soil or the cultivation of flowers, trees, vegetables, and shrubs. You can also use the material to dress and feed the lawn as well.

Use Compost as a Mulch

When used for soil conditioning, compost improves the soil for the establishment of turf, trees, shrubs, and planting beds. You can also mix a blend of grass seed and compost to repair divots. Apply compost as a mulch in order to preserve the moisture content of the soil, minimise erosion, and suppress the growth of weeds.

Keep Compost Stored in a Dry and Cool Place

As a growing media, compost can be applied in one of various ways, depending on the application. The formulation that you use should be based on the other substrates that are used and the nutrient makeup of the material. When you use a commercial garden compost in Thirsk or one that is made of garden waste, keep the material stored in a dry and cool place. Keep it covered to prevent any contamination from wind-blown seeds from weeds.

Collecting the Waste Material

A garden compost of this type, which is peat-free, is sourced from a variety of households before being recycled into a high-quality garden material. During the primary growing season, which runs from March to October, green waste is produced and collected from households and distributed to composting facilities. The contents are stored on a concrete-type pad and prepared for processing.

Initiating the Process

After this initial step, the waste is shredded before it is stored in windrows. In a commercial processing facility, each windrow holds about 500 tonnes of material. The rows of the green waste are tracked and turned routinely. During this phase, the moisture content and temperature are maintained to promote the composting process. This process goes on for about three weeks before the next phase.

The Secondary Stage

During the next four weeks, the waste is put through a trommel. A trommel is a huge rotary drum that is used to filter and divide the larger waste material, such as wood and branches. It is then put through wind-sifting equipment where more litter is extracted. Any bigger content is returned to the initial processing stage and mixed in with the waste.

The End Result

By the end of the composting steps, the compost is divided into two grades. The resulting materials are prepared to be sold in bulk or bagged. This material is used by gardeners, horticulturists, and farmers. By understanding how a composing product is made and why it is used, you can encourage better turf, vegetable, plant, and flower growth in your yard and garden.

If you want to make the most of your soil and planting efforts, you need to use a compost regularly, such as a mix that can also be used to feed and dress your turf and keep your soil in tip-top shape. That is why it is important to order your compost from a supplier that has the equipment and knowledge to provide the best additive for your gardening, horticultural, or farming needs.
